November Update from Oregon

11/6/2019

It’s been a while since my last letter.  Every few days I’d thought I could report the news of a great house, but the answer has been ’no’ eight times for so many different reasons.  Of course there were properties that were “no’s from me upon seeing them, so we looked at about fifteen houses along the way.
The good news is I just bought a house in North Albany — out in the country — it’s so pretty here.  I’m going to live on Peach Tree Lane!  (Isn’t that perfect?!)
Some work to be done, but I can make it my own.  And there’s time and money to do it!  I’ll close escrow Nov. 18 and will be so glad to get settled SO I CAN SEW!
Sure has been fun to think about my new studio space and how it will work with different furniture/equipment.  I know it will take some time to get the work done, but at least I’ll be sleeping there before long.

In the mean time I’ve had a lovely rest in the comfort of Shirley’s ‘Hideaway’ apartment that will be available for B&B when I’m out.  What a good friend to walk with me along this journey.  (Not only have we known each other for 50 years [since our freshman year in college], but we also went to design school together so we’re great at looking at house possibilities and she knows lots of resources here.)

I’m almost finished with my giant floral hexie quilt (about 80” x 80”) — hand-piecing the green corners has given me some creative outlet while I wait.  I think I’ve added about 400 hexies to make it square.  Probably about 1200 total hexes.) Not so fun/easy to work without a design wall, but we do what we have to do.

Hope you’re all safe and well and making beautiful things.  A community of makers is a precious resource for encouragement and inspiration — I’m missing all my quilting friends.  And my friends who don’t quilt…
Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope you’ll spend some time counting your blessings.

"I'm here to buy a house!"  (ha, ha, ha...)

Last week I was in Oregon with my best friend.  I thought I would find a house and buy it!
Turns out REALTY and REALITY is a different game here and there -- a tale of two cities...
My house in Fallbrook is in escrow (set to close near the end of September). Here we give in to lower offers and concede to other discounting processes (repairs, closing costs...). There the houses go for more than asking price and sellers won't even look at you if there are any contingencies (waiting for an existing escrow to close...).
You must have the cash in hand.
Needless to say, I offered on three houses, and got none.  And what I can afford is
VERY small = no studio of any size.
With these constraints made obvious, I'm rethinking the kinds of activities
I will do regarding my quilting life.

But it was a great time of physical refreshment -- good sleep, wonderful food
            and gorgeous weather.
And my friend is a great support and confidant.  We went to design school together
and pretty well know what the other likes.
So it was fun to look at properties together.  And I have a good realtor to depend on.

It seems the Fallbrook house will close escrow, the mover will pack containers,
and my friend and I will drive to Oregon.
I'll stay with her while the containers are stored and I look for a house again --
this time with the money in my pocket!

Thanks to all of you who are checking in with me about my progress.

There will be another "bundle sale" (curated cottons)
                 on September 7 -- 9am to 2pm.

944 La Vonne Avenue, Fallbrook 92028

And there will be an estate sale sometime near the third week of September.
     Details will follow.

"You will be challenged -- you will grow."
This was always part of my class description.
Guess that's how I like to live!

RETIREMENT!

6/12/2019

Biggest news (for me) in two decades -- I'm retiring from my SDCCD teaching gig and planning to move to Oregon near my best friend!
After 14 years in Point Loma at the West City Campus (and 12 more before that with Palomar College) teaching fiber arts, it's time to pop this balloon and have a new adventure.  I expect to find a home with a great studio space and keep on designing and making artful quilts.  I'll be doing workshops here (SoCal)  and retreats there!  And, happily, still collaborating with Hoffman Fabrics, too.
My kids are excited for me (and themselves!) and that's important support for my dream.
The bittersweet comes from ending weekly time with my dear students -- they have fueled my creative work.  I love to watch them  meet the challenges of our class projects. They are family to me. (As are my precious friends who don't quilt.)
